The results you get from a remodeled kitchen can be spectacular. There may be no room in your home where the before-and-after difference is so pronounced. And there’s probably not another room that will see as much use as your kitchen. It’s no wonder that the kitchen (“the heart of the home”) is the most popular room to renovate.
We’ve found that most people look at a kitchen remodel because something just isn’t working right. They may have a hard time putting their finger on it initially, but somehow their kitchen simply isn’t meeting their needs. Here are three good reasons for a kitchen-remodeling project.
You long for wide-open spaces. There was a time when kitchens were pretty much devoted to food preparation and that was it. People were kept out of the kitchen. Today’s kitchen is a social hub. Families congregate there. Friends hang out there and cook (and often eat) there. Homework gets done there. If you’re having a party, you can’t keep people out of the kitchen. If your kitchen is too cramped to handle the crowds, that’s a perfect reason to remodel.
You can’t “go with the flow.” Most good kitchen design is done with workflow in mind. Many designers talk about a “work triangle” in the kitchen that makes food preparation a lot more convenient. If the current layout of your kitchen has you running back and forth, it’s probably a good sign that the space isn’t optimally designed.
You just don’t like the way your kitchen looks. Sound superficial? It’s not. Your kitchen gets a lot of use. If it feels tired or dark or crowded, that’s not a good thing. It’s where your family hangs out. It’s where your friends and guests gather. If you don’t feel comfortable in your own kitchen, how will they? And on top of that, it’s a good investment. If you ever decide it’s time to move, your kitchen can be a huge selling point—if it’s attractive and welcoming.
